Drivers are bracing for slowdowns as Barrie invests in infrastructure and road work to keep pace with plans for 20,000 new homes in the city’s southern tier.
Projects beginning this fall include:
Expansion of Mapleview Drive East and Yonge Street:
- Construction for Mapleview Drive East is expected to begin in November 2025, with completion targeted for Spring 2028. Construction for Yonge Street is expected to begin in spring 2026. Work will include widening Mapleview Drive East and Yonge Street, improving intersections including the Yonge/Mapleview signalized intersection, adding multi-use trails and sidewalks, and reconstructing St. Paul Crescent.
New Huronia and McKay trunk sewer and watermain:
- Construction is expected to begin in this month, with completion targeted for spring 2028. Work includes installing a new watermain on McKay Road East, new trunk sanitary sewers on McKay and Huronia Roads, and roadway reconstruction and widening on Huronia Road.
The projects are receiving $53.4 million in funding from the Ontario government.
“These investments will ensure that the south end of Barrie continues to grow to meet the needs of residents and businesses,” said Doug Downey, MPP for Barrie – Springwater – Oro-Medonte. “Critical infrastructure investments will help support economic growth within the region, which helps to benefit all Ontarians.”
Residents should expect increased traffic impacts in Barrie’s south end while this work is underway, the southern Ontario city said in a press release.
