ANGUS – A critical piece of municipal infrastructure is underway in Essa Township following an official groundbreaking ceremony on Friday for the new Angus Joint Facility Station 2.
Located at 14 Huron St., the new multi-purpose building will serve as a key hub for emergency services, public works, and parks and recreation operations.
Essa Township council awarded the design/build contract to DOMM Construction Ltd. in late 2025. According to municipal records, the accepted quotation was $4,838,103, which includes a 1.76 per cent HST portion but excludes contract administration and provisional items.
The contract quote was significantly lower than two other bidders, Niacon Limited at $7,425,229 and Koler Construction Inc. at $9,989,023.
“The new facility is essential to supporting the community’s continued growth, and will accommodate improved apparatus, increased staffing, and dedicated training spaces,” Mayor Sandy Macdonald said at the ceremony. “These enhancements will ensure fire personnel have the tools and resources they need to serve residents effectively and safely.”
Fire Chief Doug Burgin noted that the existing fire hall has served the community for 60 years. The new station is designed to improve response times and provide upgraded resources for staff and residents.
Simcoe-Grey MPP Brian Saunderson also attended the groundbreaking to recognize the infrastructure investment and its support for local first responders.
Construction of the facility is scheduled to begin imminently.
