The City of Barrie has announced a new purpose-built rental housing development that will add 268 rental units to the city’s housing supply, including 54 affordable homes.
Proposed by Black Creek Group, the project will be built at 17 Sophia St. and is part of the city’s ongoing efforts to increase the availability of rental and affordable housing.
“Council has made increasing the supply of affordable housing a priority,” Mayor Alex Nuttall said in a statement. “The 54 affordable units at 17 Sophia Street are part of the more than 770 affordable homes approved across our city, and this project reflects the strong partnership between the City and Black Creek Group to deliver more housing for Barrie residents.”
The affordable units are among more than 770 affordable homes approved by council through investments, partnerships and housing incentive programs.
“This development reflects what’s possible when the public and private sectors work together,” said Black Creek Group founder and managing partner Nicholas Francis, adding the development demonstrates the benefits of collaboration between the public and private sectors.
“We’re proud to partner with the City of Barrie to deliver new rental housing, including affordable units, that will help meet the needs of current and future residents.”
