A major east-end road and watermain project is now complete, with the City of Barrie announcing the final phase of upgrades along Duckworth Street and Grove Street East.

The multi-year, three-phase project included the full reconstruction of Duckworth Street from Bell Farm Road to St. Vincent Street, along with the installation of a new watermain on Grove Street from Duckworth Street to Nelson Street.

Mayor Alex Nuttall said the work is part of a broader push to modernize the city’s infrastructure.

“In addition to upgrading aging water and sewer systems, these improvements support safer streets, better traffic flow, and more options for walking and cycling,” Nuttall said in a statement.

The project’s key features include:

  • replacement of watermains and sanitary sewers
  • stormwater system upgrades to improve drainage
  • widened roads with new dedicated bike lanes
  • new sidewalks, curbs, and fresh pavement
  • intersection upgrades, including new permanent traffic signals at Codrington and Duckworth

The improvements stem from a 2014 Municipal Class Environmental Assessment that identified the need for enhanced active transportation along Duckworth Street. City officials said the final design also addressed aging underground infrastructure while adding modern safety and mobility features.

Final pavement markings, including bike lanes on both Duckworth and Grove, were completed last week.
