Northern Transformer Corporation will establish a new $206.8-million manufacturing facility in Innisfil, a project expected to create 151 jobs.

The Vaughan-based company, which specializes in custom-engineered transformers, says the facility will produce liquid-filled transformers of up to 750 MVA and 500 kV. These large-scale units are used in high-voltage power transmission networks, electricity generation and major industrial projects such as mining and data centres.

“We’re proud to expand our footprint in Ontario to meet the rising demand for mission-critical large power transformers across North America,” president and CEO Alexei Miecznikowski said in a statement. “This investment not only boosts our production capacity and technical capabilities, but also drives job creation, innovation and supply chain growth in the region.”

The Ontario government is supporting the project with a loan of up to $10.5 million through the Invest Ontario Fund.

“Northern Transformer’s investment in Innisfil sends a clear and compelling message: In the face of global uncertainty, Ontario remains a stable, resilient and competitive partner to do business with,” said Vic Fedeli, minister of economic development, job creation and trade. “Through Invest Ontario, our government is proud to support a project that aligns with our unyielding commitment to create high-value jobs for Ontario workers, strengthen Ontario-made supply chains and position the province for lasting prosperity.”

Northern Transformer already produces small and medium power transformers for utilities, as well as customers in the renewables, nuclear, industrial, mining and petrochemical sectors across North America.

“Northern Transformer’s investment is an important win for Innisfil and the province,” said Khawar Nasim, CEO of Invest Ontario. “It builds capacity in critical electric grid equipment, creates good jobs and opens new opportunities for Ontario suppliers.”
