The BCA has a Skilled Trades Promotion Committee whose responsibility is to raise the profile and awareness of skilled trades as a viable career option. This committee meets regularly to find new ways to encourage students to enter the trades.
Several advancements achieved in 2021 include:
- Member survey to identify training gaps and interest in hiring students.
This information was shared with school boards so that they can direct students to members looking to hire.
- Member testimonials promoting the trades
- Safety training offered to students free of charge
- Virtual site tour (see below)
- The Jordan Abercrombie Memorial Scholarship was awarded to three local students entering in to the trades
A variety of endeavours are under construction:
- A dedicated Skilled Trades webpage on the BCA website
This page will be a resource to both school boards and students
- Connecting schools/students with members – Simcoe County boards and students will be invited to our member BBQ in September
- Georgian College Career Day – a two-day event taking place at the Barrie and Midland campuses in early 2022
- Additional virtual site tours will be conducted until in-person site tours resume
- A hands-on Career Day to be held at local schools will include activities and speakers to engage students, parents and teachers
