DECAST Precast Solutions: Climate-resilient infrastructure

Barrie Construction News special feature

As communities continue to adapt to the impacts of climate change, resilient infrastructure has never been more important. DECAST is proud to have supplied precast concrete solutions to the Town of Innisfil providing a key infrastructure product designed to improve stormwater management and reduce localized flooding near the shores of Lake Simcoe.

The project addresses increasing drainage challenges caused by more intense rainfall, low-lying elevations, and expanding development, all of which have contributed to increased stormwater runoff and localized flooding. The site required durable infrastructure capable of performing in challenging weather conditions making precision-engineered precast components the ideal solution.

DECAST supplied four 5180 mm x 1220 mm precast concrete box culvert sections, totaling 10 metres in length, designed and manufactured in accordance with CSA and MTO requirements. The use of precast components simplified installation while maintaining exceptional quality and structural performance.

The installation included:

  1. Culvert bedding preparation.
  2. Installation of precast concrete cut-off walls.
  3. Placement of the 5180 mm x 1220 mm rise precast concrete box culvert sections.
  4. Joint waterproofing.
  5. Placement of natural substrate and round river stone within the culvert and channel.
  6. Installation of dowels and reinforcing steel.
  7. Backfilling

Manufactured at DECAST’s state-of-the-art facility in Utopia, each precast component was produced under strict quality-controlled conditions to ensure precision, durability, and long-term performance. Off-site manufacturing also reduced installation time, minimized site disruption, and helped to accelerate construction timelines on this environmentally sensitive site.

From engineered customization to efficient installation, DECAST precast solutions helped deliver a reliable drainage system that will improve flood resilience and support the Town of Innisfil’s infrastructure for years to come.
