The Orillia and District Construction Association (ODCA) and the Orillia Manufacturers Association) have scheduled the fourth annual Explore the Trades event in co-operation with local secondary schools to encourage young people to consider trades careers.

The trade show style event on Oct. 17 at Orillia Secondary School “provides an opportunity for local secondary students to explore opportunities in the trades at a time when they are trying to determine which career path they should take,” the event invitation says.

“This is a great opportunity for students to get firsthand knowledge of potential careers in skilled trades positions locally, in both the manufacturing and construction sectors. The exhibitors are encouraged to dress the part and to bring parts, components, finished products, engaging displays and interactive tools to make the experience for the student’s one that will hopefully leave a lasting impression.”

While the event is not billed as a job fair, there are opportunities for discovering candidates for apprenticeships and part-time help “Last year relationships were forged and some students are now doing co-op placements or working part time for some of the employers.”

Local students will attend the event from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Local organizations will provide information about scholarship and apprenticeship opportunities, as well as supplementary learning and training possibilities.

The fee to participate is $40 if are a member of one of the supporting associations, or $60 for non-members, and includes lunch for two exhibitor staff, a table, and chairs.
