The Barrie Construction Association provides construction opportunities, solutions and relationships.

Greetings BCA Members,

The BCA Board of Directors and staff are pleased to present you with our eleventh annual BCA Magazine; your only official BCA publication.

Services

This past year has been a busy one for your board and staff. Our goal is to continue to bring you value for your membership dollars. In our efforts to provide you with the highest number of project opportunities, the BCA has expanded the plan room content to contain projects in the Greater Toronto Area. The plan room staff are bringing you more projects than ever before. More than 1,900 projects have come through the BCA doors in the past year. Compare this to just over 1,000 projects in 2014. We regularly meet with municipal procurement departments to ensure that the feed of documents remains consistent.

Did you know that more than 170 BCA members subscribe to the electronic plan room? Imagine having project drawings, specifications, addendums and bidders lists at your fingertips – 24 hours a day, seven days a week. With a simple phone call to the office, we can have you set up to view the plan room projects on-line or we can come to you for a demonstration.

A new feature in the plan room is the addition of colour copies. We can scan and print in colour for very reasonable rates. Have you had a chance to check out our Mylar printing? Mylar is a sheet made of polyester resin which is water (and coffee) resistant. Have your site drawings printed on this product in the same amount of time as regular blueprint paper.

We have expanded our safety training to include the following courses:

Counterbalance Forklift

Confined Space Awareness

Elevating Platform

Emergency First Aid & CPR Level C

Fit Testing

Lock Out/Tag Out

Standard First Aid & CPR Level C

Traffic Control Book 7

Transportation of Dangerous Goods

Working at Heights

Working at Heights Refresher

WHMIS – GHS

Don’t forget that the BCA has two commissioners of oath on staff. Both Bryony Buchanan and I can notarize your construction related documents – at no charge to you.

Looking for some professional development? Curious about a construction/business related subject? Visit the education section on the BCA website as we regularly schedule Lunch & Learns (Violence in the Workplace, Medicinal Marijuana etc) and courses (Close-Out of a Construction Project, Responding to an RFP etc). We also offer on-line training (Construction Law, Construction Industry Ethics etc) and will be offering on-line safety training in the near future.

Other services available to you include CCA/CCDC Documents and Seals, Daily Commercial News, board and training room rentals.

If there are any other services you require, please don’t hesitate to ask. We are here to serve you and always happy to help.

Community leadership is vital to BCA members. This past year, members generously supported the I.O.O.F. Seniors Home, the Barrie & District Christmas Cheer, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the local chapter of the Canadian Cancer Society.

In recent years, the BCA members significantly changed the lives of Joe and Ann Lescan when they partnered with the Simcoe County Home Builders to renovate an entire home in a weekend to make it accessible for Joe, who had tragically become a quadriplegic after an accident.

This summer, BCA members will once again rally behind those people most vulnerable in our community. Redwood Park Communities helps build safe, hopeful housing to support individuals facing chronic homelessness.

With support from the County of Simcoe, the Government of Ontario, and the City of Barrie, Redwood Park Communities and the David Busby Street Centre are partnering on the conversion of the under-used Barr’s Motel on Essa Rd in Barrie. The BCA is proud to offer support to Redwood through their Adopt-A-Unit campaign. Our donation covers the cost to fully renovate a motel room in to a furnished bachelor apartment, complete with kitchen, bathroom, new flooring, bed, linens and curtains.

In order to maximize the benefits received from the construction community, the BCA hosted the tender for the Barr Motel conversion on their BestBidz platform. Members viewing the plans and specifications were inspired to provide their best pricing and to offer gifts in kind in the form of labour and materials donations.

Please contact myself or Redwood Park directly if you would like to offer additional assistance. Redwood is always looking for volunteers in the area of family support, facility maintenance and unit preparation as tenants move out and in of the units.

How to get involved

This magazine includes many interesting and informative articles about your association and its affiliates. The strength of the Barrie Construction Association is the active involvement and diversity of its members. All members are welcome to attend any board of directors meeting and can join any one of the many committees formed to provide you with the best service possible.

Should you have any ideas for future publications, be sure to drop a line to me at alisonsmith@barrieca.com.

I will continue to visit members on a weekly basis, it is always a pleasure to be welcomed so warmly and I look forward to meeting with each of you.

I am honoured to serve our membership, the board of directors and the construction industry as the executive director of this association. The BCA staff are committed to supporting members on all levels.

I look forward to seeing everyone at upcoming events, and please feel free to drop by the BCA for a visit with the team at any time.

Thank you,

Alison
