The BCA has a Skilled Trades Promotion Committee whose responsibility is to raise the profile and awareness of skilled trades as a viable career option. This committee meets regularly to find new ways to encourage students to enter the trades.
Several advancements achieved in 2022 include:
- Virtual site tour during the construction of the new Mnoyaawgamig Building – Place of Well-Being – on Rama Road
- The Jordan Abercrombie Memorial Scholarship was awarded to three local students entering the trades. 2021 recipients:
- Isaac Boone – Electrical Apprentice (3rd term)
- Rebecca Elder – Electrical Apprentice (2nd term)
- Aaron Crang – Civil Engineering Technology
- A dedicated Skilled Trades webpage was added to the BCA website – a resource to both school boards and students
- Connecting schools/students with members – Simcoe County boards and students were invited to our member BBQ last September
A variety of endeavours are under construction:
- Construction Career Day will take place in October – students will gain first-hand experience as they tour local job sites
- Georgian College Career Day – a two-day event taking place at the Barrie and Midland campuses in early 2023
- Additional virtual site tours will be added to our Skills Trades webpage
